Turf Wars: Chaco v. Teva

As we as species grow smarter, so does what we wear.

Footwear was once nothing more than a way to protect out feet from rocks and the cold. Today, not only does what we wear on our feet protect us from the elements, but they can describe who we are.

Whether you prefer business shoes, high-heels, or no shoes at all, your footwear, or the lack thereof, serves a purpose.

Two of the most popular sandal companies in the United States, Chaco and Teva, advertise their products to the adventurer in us all. But are they both for everyone?

For almost four years I have worn a pair of Teva Terra FI Lite sandals with little complaints. They are rugged, grip well on both wet and dry surfaces, and very comfortable, well after you break them in at least.

After a ten year love-affair with the Teva sandals, I wanted to see what the fuss was all about with Chaco's, so last spring I purchased a pair of customized Chaco ZX/2's. They are unique, comfortable and good for water activities, unless less you have a long walk ahead after getting wet.

Here are the Pros and Cons of each pair:

Teva Terra FI Lite Sandals

Pros:

  • Easy to put on and take off
  • Good for standing and long walks
  • Excellent traction

Cons:

  • Rough to break in
  • Feet easily slide around on shoe when wet
Chaco ZX/2 Sandals

Pros:
  • Stylish
  • Highly customizable
  • Great water shoes
Cons:
  • Adjusting straps is difficult and time-consuming
  • Make your feet smell terrible when wet/sweaty
  • Rub blisters around straps when feet are wet
  • Do not have good grip when on wet or damp surfaces
Conclusion:

If you are someone who enjoys to look good in the summer months and do not intend on walking a lot, then Chaco's might be for you. For those you who like your feet to breath on like hikes and don't want to worry about getting blisters after getting wet-feet, Teva sandals are for you.

Which ever side you choose to take, make sure you break them in before you go off on an extended adventure. Blisters are never fun.

Do you have a pair of Chaco's or Teva's, or both? What is it you love, or hate, about them?
