The Ghost Bear

Photo taken by Paul Nicklen
British Colombia, Canada, is undoubtably a special place. From it's temperate climate and luscious forests to the rare animals hidden under it's canopy. The spirit bear, or Kermode bear, is one of British Columbia's most unique animals, including it's designation as the official animal of BC.

Believe it or not, the bear in the picture above is a black bear. About 10 percent of American black bears have white coats, this is believed to be caused by a recessive gene trait. Paul Nicklen found this bear relaxing and enjoying a meal during the peak of the salmon run in September. Read what he had to say about this majestic beast in the Veolia Environmental Photographer of the Year contest, for Outside Magazine. Check out the other top-ten photos for the contest as well!
